Are the San Francisco Giants Approaching Free Agency Correctly?

When you think about the recent history of the San Francisco Giants it is hard not to think about the fact that they have won two titles in the past four seasons.  Because they have done that it is hard to argue with what the Giants have done and are doing in free agency, but looking at what they’ve done this offseason is making more than a few people scratch their heads.  A team that finished at the bottom of the league in home runs, only bested by the lowly Miami Marlins, has signed four pitchers so far and have yet to be seriously linked to a bat at all.

It shouldn’t be all that surprising if you really dig deep into it, though.  The Giants have been built upon pitching over the last few seasons, and while they did not perform like they hoped in the 2013 season, the addition of Tim Hudson and the resigning of Tim Lincecum and Ryan Vogelsong could help the staff return to form.  From the 2012 season to the 2013 season where the entire starting pitching staff seemed to struggle the ERA dropped .32 points.  This doesn’t seem like a lot, but it dropped them from 7th overall in ERA and a World Series title to 22nd overall in ERA and a miss out on the the playoffs.

So, are the Giants really approaching free agency wrong?  If having solid pitching worked, even if they only need a change of .32 points in ERA, then shouldn’t resigning a two time Cy Young award winner and another solid veteran like Hudson be the key?

Again, it is hard to argue with two championships in four years, but how can they continue to win with that serious lack of power in a division where the Los Angeles Dodgers have power to spare?  They did ink right fielder Hunter Pence to a lucrative deal and he has pop, but if they’re going to have any other power it is going to come from guys like Pablo Sandoval and Buster Posey.  Both have proven to be excellent players, but they would each have to match their career highs in home runs if the Giants are going to rise out of the bottom of the league in home runs.  They have to improve in home runs to rise back to the top, right?  Wrong, in 2013 they were second to last in home runs, but in the World Series run of 2012 they finished dead last in home runs.

So, they really are doing it right.  By bringing back Lincecum, who appeared to be rebounding late in the season, and bringing in Hudson who has been consistently good his entire career, the Giants are doing the right thing.  Filling out their rotation with guys they trust can help it rebound, and bringing back one of the best lefty specialists in the game in Javier Lopez is what is best for the team.  They have built a borderline dynasty on starting pitching and a solid bullpen, and they are going to try and do it again.  Because, hey, it is hard to argue with two championships in four years right?
