The Oakland Athletics will be without star shortstop Marcus Semien for at least six weeks after being scheduled to undergo wrist surgery on Tuesday.
The injury itself occurred during Spring Training, but Semien thought he would be able to play through it. That's obviously no longer the case here. Semien will be re-evaluated in six weeks, at which point a better determination of his timetable to return will be known.
Semien, 26, was hitting just .171 with one homer and four RBI before being placed on the DL. Last season saw him hit 27 homers while driving in 75 runs.
With Semien out of action, Adam Rosales will continue to get the start at short for Oakland. Though, there's definitely a scenario in play here that suggests top prospect Franklin Barreto will eventually get a look in Semien's stead.
