The Baltimore Orioles have struck a long-term deal with their second free agent of the past week. The team signed Dexter Fowler to a three-year, $33 million contract — resources that were to be used on Yovani Gallardo before that deal fell through for the time being.
In picking up Fowler, the Orioles were able to add an outfielder that boasts a solid combination of power and speed. In his only season with the Chicago Cubs last year, Fowler hit a career high 17 homers while stealing 20 bases.
Fowler, 29, will likely find himself as Baltimore's every-day right fielder in a trio that includes both Adam Jones and Hyun Soo Kim. That's a solid amount of power from the three outfield positions. Add in Manny Machado, Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo, and that's one heck of a potent lineup.
If the Orioles are somehow able to finalize their deal with Gallardo, that will give them two solid veteran additions heading into the season.
As it is, picking up Fowler fills a pretty obvious hole in the lineup.
