Biggest Surprises Early in the MLB Season

Cleveland Indians: The 21-17 record alone says something for the Indians.  With a young pitching staff in Scott Kazmir Ubaldo Jimenez, and Cody Allen the low ERA’s these guys have possessed prove this team is one to watch out for.  In case you aren’t sold yet, how about Cleveland’s hitting? Carlos Santana is hitting .325/.438/.605.  Also, the Indians have Ryan Raburn who is shelling out a .313 batting average.  This team is for real.

Josh Donaldson:  A lot of Oakland Athletics fans have been happy with the way Donaldson has performed lately.  It must be that Mohawk.  He is hitting a .315 average with 47 hits, 14 doubles, and 25 RBI’s.  One of the A’s guys who comes to the plate, and you know something good is about to happen.  He’s been on fire lately, and I know green and gold fans are pumped to have him representing their team right now.

Josh Hamilton: Unfortunately for Hamilton, he didn’t make this list because it was a good surprise.  Hamilton cost a pretty penny and his numbers aren’t quite matching his salary this season.  He’s hitting a measly .214 with 12 RBI’s and 44 strikeouts.  His hair may be flake free, but he definitely needs to start hitting the ball.

New York Yankees: The Yankees are actually doing well considering the roster is filled with injuries, and not Derek Jeter. This team is 25-14.  You read that right.  Everyone thought they would be absolutely horrible this season.  Yes, myself included.  The great Mariano Rivera’s last season is not looking as depressing as we all thought.  Brett Gardner and Ichiro Suzuki have been hitting the ball, but there is room for improvement on their end.  Suzuki’s glove has been doing most of the work anyways.  Slugger Vernon Wells has been doing great with a .300 average and nine homeruns.  We get it Yankees, you’ll never be horrible.

Arizona Diamondbacks: This team has been on fire lately. The Snakes have a 22-18 record, and even beat the Atlanta Braves who possess the Upton brothers.  Patrick Corbin has been unstoppable with a 6-0 record, and is throwing 71% strikes as a first pitch, which is the best in the MLB.  Hitting wise, Didi Gregorius has been hitting well with a .354 average and 23 hits in 65 at-bats.  Plus the ladies’ favorite Paul Goldschmidt has been on a tear with 10 bombs and a .310 average.  Arizona is hot.

Adam Dunn: His name should be spelled Adam Done, and there are many reasons why.  Dunn does have the worst batting average in the league with a .137 and 48 strikeouts.  He still has a good amount of homeruns thus far, but his batting average and reputation aren’t showing his potential.

Jean Segura: Segura is every fantasy owners dream right now.  The 23 year old is batting .359/.403/.592 in 36 games this season and will probably be in the 30 homers club by the end of the season.  Segura is ridiculous right now and the Brewers are lucky to have him.

Matt Harvey: Harvey has been dominate on the mound this season, putting the Mets on the map.  In 56.1 innings pitched, he has 62 strikeouts, a 1.44 ERA, and a .73 WHIP.  The guy is ridiculous.  The 24 year-old recently dominated the White Sox allowing just one hit while striking out 12, but he took a no-decision to beat the Sox 1-0 in 10 innings.

R.A. Dickey:  The Blue Jays were all that was talked about during spring training, after all the lineup has some of the biggest names in the game right now.  However last year’s Cy Young winner has not been performing since going to Toronto.  Dickey has a 4.83 ERA with a 1.35 WHIP in 54 innings pitched thus far.  The knuckleballer has been battling mild inflammation in his back and neck which may be the reason he hasn’t been pitching well.
