Can the Athletics Keep It Up?

Can the Athletics Keep It Up?

The Oakland Athletics seem to get a lot of attention since the movie Moneyball came out and for good reason. This team has been playing great over the past two seasons and looks to be doing it again this year. Some people do not believe that they can continue playing at this pace all season but those people are sadly mistaken.

Their pitching staff has been solid this season as they have the fifth best team ERA in the AL along with the second most wins at 38. Their closer has been amazing as well as Grant Balfour has not blown a save all season. This team doesn’t blow you away with strikeouts as they are 10th in the AL at 467 but they win games and that is all that matters. To go with their phenomenal ERA is the opponent batting average that their pitchers hold opponents to. They also square off the top five at an impressive .245 mark.

To go along with the great pitching is a decent team batting average of .247 putting them at sixth in the AL. They strike out at a higher rate than most teams but as we have seen in past years strikeouts don’t matter as much as we thought it did in the past. This team broke a major league record for k’s last season but still managed to make the playoffs.

Here is what confuses me about this team and correct me if I am wrong... They seem to not get the credit that they deserve as a great ball team. A lot of people still don’t believe they are a great team which is very confusing to me. They have the big name guys like Yoenis Cespedes and Jed Lowrie, along with fan favorite Coco Crisp and lady killer Josh Reddick. The best part about this team is the fact that they don’t care what everyone around the league thinks about them because all they do is win.

This is without mentioning that the Athletics might have the best fans in all of baseball and they can really get that place rocking out in right field. Baseball needs this team to succeed, we need to see a team with a low payroll proving that it is about being a team and not about how much money you can throw at players.

You might think this team is going to fall off at some point and they are okay with that. They will keep winning while you keep doubting and who knows, you might just see this team crowned as world champions when it is all said and done.
