The St. Louis Cardinals have played All-Star infielder Matt Carpenter on the 15-day disabled list with a strainged right oblique. Carpenter suffered the injury in Wednesday night's loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The 30-year-old infielder was hitting .298 with 14 homers, 53 RBI and a MLB-best .420 on-base percentage at the time of the injury. Needless to say, the three-time All-Star will miss this year's Mid-summer Classic.
The expectation here has to be that the Cardinals will use Kolten Wong and Jedd Gyorko in a platoon situation until Carpenter is able to return.
While Carpenter has split time between second and third this season, he's attributed more to playing third, ranking fifth at that positionin fantasy points thus far this season.
Wong, who has performed well over the past two seasons, was actually demoted to Triple-A after struggling big time earlier in the year. He's hitting just .235 with one homer and 10 RBI this season. Meanwhile, Gyorko, acquired from San Diego for Jay Bruce during the winter, is hitting .238 with seven homers and 20 RBI this season. He's a better DFS option than Wong until Carpenter returns.
