Checking the Heat: 5 MLB Managers on the Hot Seat

We haven’t seen any midseason dismissals of any managers so far this year, but some of the managers in Major League Baseball are certainly starting to feel the heat.  I don’t know if any of these managers will get the boot before the season ends, but I will take a look at the five managers most likely to be replaced.

Mike Scioscia, Los Angeles Angels

The longest tenured manager in the majors might be the one in the most trouble.  I don’t think there is anyone out there who thinks Scioscia is a bad manager, but the bottom line is that there is a change needed in Anaheim, and it likely isn’t going to be the guys with the big guaranteed contracts.  The Angels have turned things around since the beginning of the season, so the seat under Scioscia has probably cooled a bit, and Angels owner Arte Moreno has come out in support of Scioscia this season, claiming his job isn’t in jeopardy.  With a top ten payroll, the Angels management isn’t going to accept the team finishing third in the AL West forever, and unfortunately Scioscia might have to take the fall for their underachieving performance.

Bud Black, San Diego Padres

Black is in his seventh season with the Padres, and he started off great in his time with the club going 89-74 in his first season in 2007.  Unfortunately, the Padres have only had one other winning season under Black since then, and this season doesn’t look like it’s going to be any better.  It’s hard to blame Black for these struggles, as the Padres have failed to put a decent roster together since trading away Adrian Gonzalez before the 2011 season.  The Padres seem to continually be in rebuilding mode, and with that may come a change in the manager position.

Eric Wedge, Seattle Mariners

Wedge hasn’t accomplished much since being named manager of the Mariners in 2010, and he’s in his third season with the team now.  Like Black, I think it’s hard to place the blame on Wedge, especially for managing a team that has to compete with Texas, Oakland, and Anaheim every year, but eventually you need to put up some results to stay in a managing job in the big leagues.  The Mariners may look to shake things up and replace Wedge sometime soon.

Dale Sveum, Chicago Cubs

The Cubs had a dreadful season in Sveum’s first year as manager last year, losing 101 games, but the Cubs management must have seen something in his time in Chicago to keep him around for another season.  I think the management likes Sveum in Chicago, but the Cubs are a big time franchise with a big time payroll, and eventually Theo Epstein is likely to bring in a big name to manage the club.  I’m looking for the Cubs to make some big moves in free agency this offseason if they can get some players off of their payroll at the trade deadline, and I think that will include a change for the manager of the Cubs this winter.

Mike Redmond, Miami Marlins

Generally, managers in their first season get some leeway, but I have a hard time figuring out what the management of the Marlins is thinking.  The Marlins are definitely going to lose 100 games this season, and are last place in all of baseball in every significant batting category.  I suppose it would make sense to keep Redmond in keeping with the theme of spending no money, but if they do decide they want to try and compete in the NL East, perhaps a higher profile manager would help.
