Right in the thick of the National League playoff race, the Chicago Cubs decided against standing pat prior to Monday night's waiver trade deadline.
The team acquired outfielder Austin Jackson from the Seattle Mariners for a player to be named later and a $211,000 international signing slot.
Jackson, 28, was once considered one of the top young players in the game. Though, his struggles towards the end of his Detroit Tigers days and then with the Seattle Mariners after being acquired last July, have made the outfielder little more than a bench option.
Jackson is hitting .272 with eight homers and 38 RBI's this season. He's also struck out 107 times in 419 at-bats while posting a mediocre .312 on-base percentage.
The soon-to-be free agent can play multiple outfield positions, which makes his addition a boon for the Cubs. Any added flexibility as rosters expand on Tuesday will be helpful for the team's hopes of earning a playoff spot.
