C.J. Wilson's Los Angeles Angels career is now all but over. The pricey free agent addition from back in 2011 has not pitched a single game this season after feeling discomfert in his throwing shoulder during Spring Training.
Now, three months later, Wilson has opted to undergo season-ending surgery, pretty much ending his career in Los Angeles.
All said, it was what you'd call a less-than-successful tenure for Wilson in Southern California. After winning a combined 30 games and earning an All-Star appearnace in his first two seasons with the Angels, Wilson made a total of 52 starts over the previous two seasons, winning 21 games and posting an ERA of well over 4.30.
In making his decision, Wilson had this to say.
"I'm very upset that I have not been able to pitch this year," Wilson said. "It sucks to watch the team struggle, and watch my friends struggle on the field. I've been getting my body prepared, but the only support I've been able to give is in terms of advice or positive affirmation to my teammates."
With both Garrett Richards and Andrew Heaney both on the 60-day DL and out for the season, this news especially hurts the Angels pitching depth moving forward. The team signed Tim Lincecum earlier in the year, but he's posted a 1-2 record with a 6.75 ERA in three starts with the Big League team. Meanwhile, former ace Jered Weaver boasts a 6-7 record with a 5.51 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP in 16 starts this season.
