Just as the young Colorado Rockies rotation really started to come together and show promise, it took a blow on Thursday. Colorado's ace Jon Gray aggravated his left big toe injury that he initially suffered during spring training.
Gray pitched well early in the game with three shutout innings, but on a ball he had to field, it appeared he landed on the toe and the team removed him from the game not long after. Now they'll likely be without him for his next two starts at the least.
With Gray's timetable to return uncertain right now, Colorado will have to explore options to fill his rotation spot. The team called up another reliever for now and we should expect to see a starter called up later in the week.
Gray allowed six runs in 12 1/3 innings so far this season, but he seemed to find some of his form from last season and his start on Thursday was the chance to see if he would live up to the hype that surrounded him this season. Instead, fantasy owners must wait the next few weeks for Gray to return before we can get another look at the young righty.
UPDATE:
MRI results diagnosed Gray with a stress fracture in his foot. He will now be sidelined for the next month-plus, a devstating blow for fantasy owners and the Rockies. The hard-throwing righty will again be evaluated by doctors four weeks from now, then we should get an updated timetable on his return.
There is no word yet on who will replace him in the rotation.
