He had a 2013 season that was solid for the average pitcher, but extremely disappointing by his standards. His girlfriend is oen of the most coveted women in the world right now. He will be back this year.
Justin Verlander is one of the most interesting men in baseball, and last September he began to prove that most of his 2013 season was a fluke. He did not give up a single run in the final month of the season and was absolutely lights-out in the playoffs.
It was announced that Verlander will once again be the Tigers' starter on Opening Day in Detroit, even over defending Cy Young winner Max Scherzer. And for good reason, as Verlander is one of the most feared pitchers in the game. Just ask the Oakland Athletics.
Some aspects of Verlander's game make it seem as if he is not even human. Not only does he have incredible stamina and longevity, he seems to excel as each game goes on. This can be a great stat for fantasy baseball, as he can rack up more strikeouts the more innings he pitches while not experiencing any drop in his ERA or WHIP.
Also, if you draft him in your league and he does not perform well on Opening Day, DO NOT take it as a sign that he will struggle this season. Be wary that he has always had issues with the Kansas City Royals for some inexplicable reason, particularly Billy Butler.
If you do not have him on your team and he struggles on Opening Day, take advantage of someone in your league who is not aware of his achilles with the Royals. You may be able to catch them panicking and get Verlander for a much lower price. Then you can laugh as he dominates his way through the rest of the season.
Verlander is going a little lower than normal in fantasy drafts due to his struggles last year; however, his upswing at the end of the season and the playoffs gives plenty of reason to believe that Detroit's ace will be back in 2014.
Projections: 19-9 record, 2.66 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 230 K
