Following the Los Angeles Dodgers acquisition of outfielder Curtis Granderson last night, the team optioned Joc Pederson down to the minor leagues on Saturday. The 25-year-old's season-long struggles led to his locker being cleared out before the team's game against the Detroit Tigers and sent to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
In 295 plate appearances this season, Pederson encountered frequent struggles at the plate. He owned a .215/.329/.418 slash line and 101 wRC+ with 11 home runs. Things have been even worse for him at the plate since July 1, with a .178/.282/.356 slash line, .281 wOBA and 73 wRC+. Pederson kept his strikeout rate to a low 15.5 percent, but his .183 batting average on balls in play reflected some of the bad fortune he encountered.
Even with a big lead in the N.L. West, the Dodgers wanted to find an offensive upgrade and they did just that. Granderson can start in left field for Los Angeles and allows them to shift Chris Taylor to center field. Granderson is already in Detroit and will make his first start for the Dodgers in left field on.Saturday.
Pederson will see regular playing time down in Triple-A and it should provide him the opportunity to face some lower competition and try and regain some of his old form.
