Just a few months after the Los Angeles Dodgers signed Sergio Romo to join the bullpen with the hopes he could further solidify their set-up corps, the reliever now finds himself designated for assignment. Los Angeles Times' reporter Andy McCullough first broke the news on Thursday.
The 34-year-old righty signed a one-year, $3 million deal in February, but the results indicated an aging reliever with declining stuff. Across 25 innings pitched, Romo registered a 6.12 ERA, 5.73 FIP and surrendered a walk to 11.1 percent of the batters faced. Not only did Romo pitch poorly for Los Angeles, but he also missed time on the disabled list this season with an ankle injury and the late stages of his career have been riddled by injury.
Romo's tenure with his hometown team have likely come to an end. Soon he should become a free agent, then he should have a choice of teams to sign a minor-league deal with. The San Francisco Giants, who he spent his entire career wi h before he signed with the Dodgers, could be a possibility. Regardless of where Romo signs, he is no longer on the fantasy radar.
