With opening day now just days away, MLB teams are finalizing their rotations. The San Diego Padres are the latest team to make the announcement and with it came the news that Drew Pomeranz locked up the fifth spot in the team's rotation.
Pomeranz has not been sharp in the spring, over 14 innings, only two of six game appearances were starts, he has allowed 13 earned runs for a gruesome 8.36 ERA. The lefty started the spring strong, allowing just two earned runs over 4 2/3 innings, but fell apart in his final three appearances by allowing 11 earned runs in 9 1/3 innings pitched.
If there is reason to be optimistic from a fantasy point of view, Pomeranz did finish with 14 strikeouts in 14 innings and will be pitching in a pitcher's friendly park. Pomeranz could be a nice DFS play if the right matchup comes along and perhaps some back-end depth in deep fantasy leagues, but his numbers leave the question of just how long he will hold on to the gig.
