If you are in a dynasty fantasy baseball league right now, you are doing one of two things. You are looking at the upcoming week and trying to figure out who to add to your team to help you win your playoff matchup up. The flip side of that, you might be looking at the teams in the playoffs and wondering where you went wrong. If you are on the flip side you need to stop worrying about this season, and look towards next year. You can do that by picking up these under-the-radar players to help your team for next season.
Home runs and RBIs are a huge in fantasy baseball and a young player who is only owned in 34% of Yahoo fantasy leagues is the Houston Astros’ slugger Chris Carter. His average isn’t going to help you much, but he has hit 27 home runs and knocked in 74, and this team is only going to get better around him allowing him to do even more. The best part about adding Carter, he’s eligible at two positions, first base and outfield.
If you haven’t heard, Kole Calhoun is setting the world on fire for the Los Angeles Angels. He got the call when underperforming star Josh Hamilton went down with an injury in late July, and since he has moved into the cleanup spot for the Angels. He has been playing exclusively against right handed pitching, but recently got his first start against a lefty, and went three for four with a RBI. Even only against right handers, he may be worth a waiver flier for the future in dynasty leagues because after only just over a month he has performed well in multiple categories. He has six home runs, 19 runs scored, 20 RBIs and is batting at .271 and on top of all of that, he is only owned in 3% of Yahoo fantasy baseball leagues.
If you haven’t heard yet, the St. Louis Cardinals have found another starting pitcher in Michael Wacha. Wacha was the Cards first round pick in 2012 and is already paying dividends for the first place team. He has pitched in 12 games this season, six of them starts, and has an ERA of only 2.72 with three wins, and he has been red hot lately. In the last two weeks Wacha has pitched 17 innings, earned one win, and has an ERA of zero, yes zero. If you’ve followed the Cards recently you know they just keep getting better with mostly home grown talent, and this kid might be another one. He is only owned in 34% of Yahoo leagues, and if your dynasty league is one of them then put in a claim on him immediately.
There was a kid who looked passed by his team multiple times who then went on to nearly throw a perfect game, Yusmerio Petit. Not much has gone right for the San Francisco Giants this season, but they at least found their next piece to their starting rotation for years to come. It is no surprise that the Giants could be down two starting pitchers next season as both Tim Lincecum and Barry Zito heading towards free agency, and it is likely one of them, if not both, are going to be gone which will open a spot for Petit to start the season in the starting rotation. He has gotten his shot with multiple teams and never stuck, but this season with a 2.05 ERA and three wins in his four starts has earned a shot to finally stick with the Giants. He is currently only owned in 21% of Yahoo fantasy baseball leagues, and if he does indeed start next season in the Giants rotation he could be a sleeper that could help you for years to come as he pitches in a very pitcher friendly park.
