Fantasy Baseball: Breaking Down Outfielders by Tier

Outfield might just be the deepest hitting position in fantasy baseball. I’m not talking in overall numbers since every team has to have three starting outfielders, I mean that from top to bottom, outfield provides the most depth. This list is only going to name players who’s first position is outfield. Players such as Mark Trumbo will not be ranked because he is a first baseman who happens to be outfield eligible.

Also remember this tier form of ranking is not saying what round a player should be drafted in. This form of ranking is more about grouping players together who will produce similar numbers. So just because a player is listed in tier two doesn’t mean he should necessarily be drafted before a player in the third tier. Carlos Gonzalez is a huge injury risk so he is listed in the second tier base off of potential but likely won’t get drafted as early as many of those players due to the risk that he carries.

Tier One: Mike Trout, Giancarlo Stanton, Andrew McCutchen, Adam Jones, Carlos Gomez.

These are the truly elite outfielders in the game right now. With these guys you know exactly what you are going to get when you draft them and there are no doubts regarding talent or a regression. If you are looking to go outfield early these are the players you will want to draft.

Tier Two: Jose Bautista, Jacoby Ellsbury, Carlos Gonzalez, Yasiel Puig, Justin Upton, Ryan Braun, Bryce Harper, Nelson Cruz.

Many of these names in the second tier carry some form of risk if you draft them. Guys such as Braun, Gonzalez, and Harper have had trouble staying healthy, but there is no denying the talent they posses while on the field. Assuming health is not a factor, every guy in this list has the talent to carry your team to a championship. After struggling last year to stay healthy Harper was one of the hotter hitters come playoff fantasy time.

Tier Three: Hunter Pence, Jayson Werth, Starling Marte, Yoenis Cespedes, Kole Calhoun, Matt Kemp, Adam Eaton, Marlon Byrd, Matt Holliday, Christian Yelich, Alex Gordon, Jay Bruce, Avisail Garcia, Brett Gardner, Melky Cabrera, Ben Revere, Michael Brantley.

This tier is a nice blend of veterans and some players who are starting to establish themselves and we still aren’t exactly sure what we are getting from them. You have your Kemp’s and your Werth’s who you have a good idea what they will do but you also have guys like Eaton and Calhoun who could produce better than last year if healthy while batting leadoff but could potentially be a bust due to injury history.

Tier Four: J.D. Martinez, George Springer, Corey Dickerson, Charlie Blackmon, Jason Heyward, Gregory Polanco, Wil Myers, Austin Jackson, A.J. Pollock, Carlos Beltran, Lorenzo Cain, Khris Davis, Marcell Ozuna, Nick Markakis, Michael Morse, Michael Cuddyer, Billy Hamilton, Josh Hamilton,

At this point hopefully you are only filling out backup outfielders because after this tier you are banking on a breakout season or a bounce back season form a Granderson like player. Some of the players in the tier four category are high potential upside players who have not met expectations, or the players who are gettign up there in age but continue to produce at a respectable fantasy pace. These guys have potential to be viable fantasy assets, but you don’t want to build your outfield around those caliber players.

Tier Five: Curtis Granderson, Drew Stubbs, Dustin Ackley, Shin-Soo Choo, Oswaldo Arcia, Carl Crawford, Coco Crisp, Michael Bourn.

At this point and beyond you can still find some hidden gems but you will in some serious trouble if your outfield is not yet set by this tier.
