Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus is never a power hitter, but he is commonly viewed as a strong player at a very thin position in fantasy baseball. He has only homered once this year, right around what is expected of him at this point, but his other stats (other than eleven stolen bases) are certainly not up to par.
Hitting second in an extremely stacked Texas Rangers lineup, Andrus was expected to excel. Even without power numbers, he was expected to drive in a fair amount of runs hitting behind run-machine Shin-Soo Choo as well as score a ton himself hitting in front of Adrian Beltre and Prince Fielder.
Andrus's .259 average, however, has hindered him from putting up these numbers. He has driven in only nine runs and scored 22. 22 runs is not a terrible number at this point, but for the two-hitter in this lineup, it is a little bit low.
Part of this problem is not Andrus's fault, especially the 22 runs scored. Hitting in front of some of the best hitters in baseball AND stealing eleven bases thus far, it is somewhat alarming that Andrus has not crossed home plate safely more times.
Here is the issue: Beltre has been injured for a chunk of the season so far and is just starting to regain his form, while Fielder has been slumping since last October and a bounceback seems inevitable.
Andrus himself has picked up his play as of late. He has hit safely in eleven straight games and is finally beginning to look like his old self at the plate. Slowly but surely, that batting average is starting to climb.
As Andrus's average climbs, expect Beltre's and Fielder's bats to heat up. This will result in more runs scored as well as more energy in the Ranger clubhouse, which could provide a morale boost to players like Andrus.
Get him while his average is still in the .250s and your opponent who owns him is about to give up and find another shortstop.
