Good Value Players
Pitcher
Justin Verlander, Tigers, $7,300: Verlander tossed seven innings against the Angels on Saturday night, giving up three earned runs, six hits and three walks while striking out four in a losing effort. Though Verlander continues to perform well below his previous Cy Young award winning level, he has shown at least some improvement during the past few weeks. Over his last seven starts, the six-time All-Star has gone 3-2 while posting a 4.40 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 7.2 K/9 across 45 innings. The Tigers obviously need their former ace to give them more than that down the stretch, but Verlander does seem to be headed in the right direction. He will next take the mound today versus the Rockies.
Catcher
Buster Posey, Giants, $3,000: Posey went 3-for-4 with the three singles, two RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 9-1 win over the Marlins. After only managing a dreadful .163/.217/.279 slash line over his first 11 games of July, Posey got back on track and started off the second half in fine fashion Friday night. If the Giants are to bounce back from the tailspin they have suffered through in recent weeks, their MVP caliber catcher will need to keep things going at the dish.
First Base
Matt Adams, Cardinals, $3,000: Adams went 2-for-5 with a double, triple, one run scored, and four RBI in Saturday's win over the Cubs. Adams provided much of the scoring for the Cardinals, driving in four of their six runs on the day. He started off the game by smacking a two-run double in the first inning to give the Cardinals an early lead, then helped put the game out of reach by roping a two-run triple in the seventh to turn a 3-2 lead into a 5-2 lead. The Cardinals' first base man is now batting .320 with 12 homers and 47 RBI.
Second Base
Dustin Pedroia, Red Sox, $3,300: Pedroia went 2-for-4 with just his fourth homer of the season in Thursday's loss to the A's. Pedroia hit just nine homers last season but was playing with a torn UCL in his thumb for almost all of the season, so it was considered likely that some of his power would return this year. However, the opposite has been true. He does have 23 doubles, but his batting average has taken a tumble and he entered play Thursday slugging just .372 after slugging .415 last year.
Third Base
Todd Frazier, Nationals, $3,300: Frazier went 2-for-4 and stole his 15th base of the season in the Reds' 7-1 loss to the Yankees on Saturday. Most everyone knows about the 19 home runs Frazier has supplied to this point, but his 15 steals lead all third baseman by a wide margin. The 28-year-old is now batting .289/.350/.495 through 96 games this season, and he's being relied on to anchor the offense from the three-hole with both Joey Votto (quad) and Brandon Phillips (thumb) sidelined.
Shortstop
Erick Aybar, Angels, $3,100: Aybar went 1-for-4 with a home run in a loss to the Royals on Sunday. He extended his hitting streak to five games Sunday, and is on pace for a career-high 12 home runs this season. Today he and the Angels face Hector Noesi who is sporting a 5.07 ERA. His last three starts consisted of 17.2 innings while giving up 23 base hits, eight earned runs, and only striking out 10 batters.
Outfield
Lorenzo Cain, Royals, $3,000: Cain went 2-for-5 with a home run, stolen base, two runs scored, and one RBI in Wednesday's loss to the Dodgers. That's the first time this season that Cain has both homered and stolen a base in the same game. He led off the game with his third homer of the season, and then stole his seventh base in the fifth. Cain doesn't stand out in any one category, but his .310/.349/.421 line makes him a usable in deep leagues.
