My Value Picks
Pitcher
Shane Greene, Yankees, $6,700: Greene has really made the most of his opportunity for the Yankees this season. He owns an excellent 2.89 ERA and with his power sinker that reaches 95 mph he has had no problem keeping the ball in the ballpark at Yankee Stadium. After dominating the Tigers for eight innings giving up no runs he welcomes a much weaker offense in the form of the Rays. Even if he doesn’t go eight scoreless he should have a very efficient and good start for daily players today.
Catcher
Travis d’Arnaud, Mets, $2,900: d’Arnaud since getting recalled to the majors is living up the potential that made him one of the top catching prospects coming into the season. Since June 24th he is batting .276 while collecting eight of his ten homeruns. Now d’Arnaud gets an easy matchup against Dan Straily who is fighting just to keep his ERA under five. With d’Arnaud if he gets a hit or two you are certainly getting plenty of bang for your buck.
First Base
Joe Mauer, Twins, $3,100: Mauer is finally representing his former all star self that made a perennial MVP candidate. Since coming back from injury he is batting .417 and now owns a 15 game hitting streak. As a guy who has always had great control of the bat when he is going right at the plate he is a good candidate to continue to produce.
Second Base
Daniel Murphy, Mets, $3,200: Murphy has really established himself as one of the top hitting second baseman in the league. He is batting .336 over the last 30 days and .303 overall on the season. Despite batting in the weak Mets lineup he still has 69 runs scored and 51 RBI. The numbers for this second baseman are much better than the numbers you would expect to see from a player at his price.
Third Base
Pablo Sandoval, Giants, $3,300: Despite the weak lineup of the Giants Sandoval has produced fairly well this season. He is now batting .280 on the season and has scored and driven in over 50. He has been even better over the last 30 days batting .304. Now he gets to bring his hot bat into a game against Kyle Kendrick who was just shelled by the Mets giving up five runs in as many innings, and has been a disappointment all season long for the Phillies.
Short Stop
Alexei Ramirez, White Sox, $3,200: Ramirez is finally putting together a breakout season in which he has hit the ball well all season long. He is batting .286 with 11 homeruns and 18 steals from the shortstop position which is extremely valuable. Tomorrows starting pitcher Mark Buehrle has not been the same since the all star break and has been very hittable. It’s a rare thing to find a shortstop with both power and speed who can bat for a good average. Ramirez does that and is very affordable at $3,200.
Outside
Kole Calhoun, Angels, $3,300: Right now everything is clicking for Calhoun at the plate. In his last six games he has recorded at least two hits in all of them but one and has two homeruns during that span. Calhoun now has a very respectable 13 homeruns out of the leadoff position to go along with a .294 batting average and 60 runs scored. With Colby Lewis on the mound for the Rangers Calhoun should be more than capable of keeping his hot streak going. Start him with confidence that he is going to produce and reap the benefits.
