My Value Picks
Pitcher
Tim Hudson, Giants, $7,400: Despite being 38 years old Hudson is putting together arguably the best year of his career. He has the second lowest ERA and WHIP of his career this season, in large part to him having his lowest BB/9 of his career at 1.4. Next up for the crafty veteran is a favorable matchup against the paltry Phillies offense. The Phillies as a team have a .248 combined batting average against Hudson and have struggled mightily all season long to score runs.
Catcher
Travis d’Arnaud, Mets, $2,700: d’Arnaud has been tearing the cover off the ball since getting called back up to the majors after making some adjustments that allow him to cover the outside part of the plate and get hits on balls that he swinging through earlier in the season. At his price with the way he is locked in at the plate you could do a lot worse.
First Base
Kendrys Morales, Twins, $2,400: Morales just saw his 12 game hitting streak end last night but a date with Hector Noesi makes Morales a strong play tomorrow. Despite Morales not delivering the power from years past he is still driving in runs and may make for a good play in the next couple weeks if gets traded to a contender with a better offense and a smaller ball park.
Second Base
Daniel Murphy, Mets, $3,000: With the shortened slate of games today the second base position is very weak if you are looking for a value man at the position. Despite the not exactly great matchup with Matt Garza on the mound he has had his games where he has been hittable and Murphy has been the Mets best and most consistent hitter this season.
Third Base
Chase Headley, Yankees, $2,900: Despite the overall disappointing season Headley has been a much better hitter over the last 30 days. He is batting .295 over that span but only has one homerun during that span. Part of that is due to batting in Petco Park where Headley is a terrible batter. Batting in Yankee Stadium should be help revive his season and power numbers especially today with Colby Lewis and his 6.37ERA and 1.84 WHIP.
Shortstop
Stephen Drew, Red Sox, $3,100: Drew got off to an abysmal start with the Red Sox but is looking much better this past week. During his last seven games Drew is batting .333 with seven runs scored, two homeruns, and six RBI. When Drew is going good at the plate he can be one of the better hitting shortstops in the game and right now he is locked in and at a very good price.
Outfield
Alex Rios, Rangers, $3,200: Rios has had a serious power shortage this season but otherwise has been stellar in every other category. He only has four homeruns but is making up for that with a .302 average, 41 runs scored, 42 RBI, and 16 steals.
