My Value Plays
Pitcher
Mike Leake, Reds, $6,800: After watching Mat Latos dominate these same Brewers last night in his first start of 2014 Leake looks to keep the train rolling today when he takes the mound. For the most part Leake has been a good pitcher for the Reds and very rarely will he throw three stinkers in a row. I have the confidence in Leake put forth a quality start and bring me the extra points for the win that are so valuable to winning in daily baseball.
Catcher
Yadier Molina, Cardinals, $2,900: Molina has been one of the top hitting catchers in the majors for years but has hit a bit of a lump over the last couple of weeks. This has caused his salary cap number to fall. When a player of Molinas caliber falls into a slump you generally don’t expect it to last for too long and for under $3,000 Molina is worth the risk for the rewards you can get out of him.
First Base
Kendrys Morales, Twins, $3,000: Morales has been a hitting machine since singing to the Twins. He has a hit in all five games he has played in and brings his hot bat into a game against a struggling Rick Porcello. In his last four starts Porcello has seen his ERA go up from the high two’s to the low fours.
Second Base
Brandon Phillips, Reds, $2,800: Phillips is hitting the ball well of last and finally with the lineup getting healthy the counting stats are starting to come back as well. He has five hits and four RBI over his last four games and squares off against Marco Estrada who has seen his season to a complete 180 after a torrid first month. Estrada’s ERA has ballooned all the way up to 4.56 after remaining in the low two’s the entire first month of the season. Look for Phillips to continue to drive the ball with success and have some RBI or runs scored today against a pitcher struggling to get outs.
Third Base
Evan Longoria, Rays, $3,300: Not your typical Longoria season to this point in the year, Longoria is starting to rebound finally. He has had a strong series against the Astros with three hits which includes a homeruns and five RBI. Opposing batters have thrived this year against the Astros and I expect Longoria to finish out the series strong.
Short Stop
Eugenio Suarez, Tigers, $3,000: Suarez got his call the majors about two weeks ago and has made the most out of his limited chances. He is batting .400 with three homeruns, six RBI and eight runs scored in only 20 at bats. Next up for Suarez is a great matchup against Ricky Nolasco who is happy any time he can keep a team from scoring four or more runs.
Outfield
Torii Hunter, Tigers, $2,900: As with Suarez it is difficult to hold out any Tigers hitter today especially one with such a small cap hit. Hunter is an established veteran who has produced all season long despite father time creeping up on him. Hunter had been struggling recently but a 2-4 last night and a game against Nolasco should be just what he needs to wake up his bat again.
