My Value Plays
Pitcher
Vance Worley, Pirates, $5,200: This is a little bit of a risky play as Worley just isn’t a pitcher with great stuff. However he has had good control this year issuing only one walk in 13.2 innings. When Worley is pounding the strike zone he is capable of getting quick outs and limiting damage. Fortunately for him he faces a Mets offense that has been awful all season long which should help Worley provide a quality start especially at his exceptionally low price.
Catcher
Wilson Ramos, Nationals, $3,000: Ramos will be making his first start coming off of the disabled list today. He has a good matchup to start against the southpaw Travis Wood who does little to instill fear into a batter. Look for Ramos to start out hot coming off the DL.
First Base
Joey Votto, Reds, $3,400: Votto has not been the same player since the knee injury in terms of batting average or power, but he continues to score and drive in runs. He has nine runs scored in his last 12 games and eight RBI. Ryan Vogelsong is the opposing pitcher tonight and he has struggled of late giving up four or more runs in three of his last five starts. Even if Votto fails to go deep once again he should drive in or score a few runs himself tonight against a struggling pitcher.
Second Base
Gordon Beckham, White Sox, $3,100: Beckham has been a very nice, cheap and reliable option at the second base position all season long. The seven long balls are very good for a middle infielder. Beckham gets to see J.A. Happ tonight who is a homeruns friendly pitcher and has struggled mightily this season with an ERA of 4.87 and a WHIP of 1.64.
Third Base
Conor Gillaspie, White Sox, $3,100: While Gillaspie has virtually no power he continues to get on base and hit the ball which has led to a solid amount of run production for the third baseman. He is batting .338 with a ten game hitting streak. In this powerful White Sox lineup as long as he continues to hit the ball the run production will continue to remain good for the value third baseman.
Short Stop
Ian Desmond, Nationals, $3,200: Desmond is locked in at the plate right now with two hits in three consecutive games as well as a steal in each of those games. The RBI and runs aren’t there despite all the hits but that could all change with a game against the Rockies pitching staff. The steals are also a good sign as he had been rather stagnant on the base paths of late, so if you can get another steal out of Desmond he could end up being a great pick today.
Outfield
Kole Calhoun, Angels, $3,300: Calhoun is raking right now at the plate. In his last six games Calhoun is batting .333 with seven RBI, eight runs scored and two homeruns. Now he gets to face Ricky Nolasco who despite only giving up two runs in his last start still owns a 5.52 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. A pitcher with such a high ERA and WHIP is exactly what you want to see for a player who is scoring and driving in over a run per game.
