My Good Value Plays
Pitcher
Jake Arrieta, Cubs $5,600: Arrieta had been fairly good this year before his clunker against the Giants where he gave up four runs in six innings. Despite the lackluster performance he managed to get a decent number of strikeouts with six in six innings pitched, which is something Arrieta has shown the ability to do early on with 26 strikeouts in 25 innings pitched. The one downfall to Arrieta this season has been his inability to limit walked with at least one in every game which has prevented him from going deep into ball games. Out of his five starts he has managed to go four innings twice and only 5.1 innings another time, with six innings being his longest outing to date. Against the Mets weak lineup Arrieta should have no problem limiting the offense and going more than six innings for the first time this year.
Catcher
John Jaso, Athletics, $3,100: Jaso has continued to be a productive batter for the A’s and has settled in nicely in the two hole. Jaso is hitting a solid .296 this year and gets the advantage of being a left handed hitter at Yankee Stadium. On the mound for the Yankees is Hiroki Kuroda who is beginning to show his age this season after two great years in New York. Kuroda owns a 4.57 ERA which is easily the worst ERA of his career as he ahs never finished a season with an ERA above four. Kuroda is allowing a lot more homeruns this year with nine in 65 innings so look for Jaso to use the short porch to his advantage and drive the ball to right field.
First Base
Ike Davis, Pirates, $2,200: Since his trade to the Pirates from the Mets Davis has been a changed man at the plate. His batting average increased from .179 to .277. The power that Davis is known for has yet to show itself with only four homeruns but as long as he bats for a high average he can be forgiven. As long as he remains disciplined at the plate and is making contact Davis is going to make for a strong extremely cheap option at first base.
Second Base
Tommy La Stella, Braves, $3,000: Certainly not a power hitter La Stella still has value as a second baseman. La Stella has been impressive at the plate in limited time having recorded two hits in three of five games played. He has also recorded a run scored in two straight games and looks to continue that trend against Erasmo Ramirez and his six ERA and 1.5 WHIP.
Third Base
Trevor Plouffe, Twins, $2,800: Plouffe has quietly put together a strong campaign. He is tied for second with all third baseman in RBI with 34 behind only Josh Donaldson. Plouffe has hit in nine of his last 13 games that has included four multi hit games. After a great start Yovani Gallardo has been very average over his last six starts. Plouffe looks to continue his recent success against a pitcher that has struggled for the last month.
Short Stop
Jean Segura, Brewers, $2,800: Segura has turned over a new leaf over the past two weeks. He has scored 11 runs over his last 11 games and now he gets to face a Twins team and their lackluster pitching. While he hasn’t been able to steal as many bags as last season due to his increased rate at being caught, Segura should still continue to score plenty of runs and bat for a decent average when he is on a hot streak.
Outfield
Jayson Werth, Nationals, $2,900: For some reason Werth is valued at under $3,000 which is a great thing for us. Werth is having another good season with a .290 batting average and 32 runs scored. The power we have grown accustomed to seeing from Werth has not been there as evidenced by his five homeruns, which has led to a drop in RBI at 22. Regardless Werth continues to produce and gets to see David Buchanan for the first time. Buchanan has pitched fairly well so far the Phillies but he doesn’t have great stuff and rarely strikes out a batter meaning his luck is about to run out.
