Fantasy Baseball: Drop 'Em: April 21, 2014

Fantasy Baseball: Drop 'Em: April 21, 2014

In fantasy sports, the general idea is to win in the draft. Get the best players at the best values and build your team to win. But, since fantasy baseball is such a long and grueling process, the waiver wire becomes a key asset to your fantasy team.

So, the question sometimes is not who to add, but who to drop for those players.

Here are a few players to add this drop from your team

Cody Asche, Philadelphia Phillies

Asche was a hot add after his three-hit opening day performance. But, since then he has four hits. Four. That is not what you want from a fantasy third baseman. It's safe to drop the Phillies third baseman for another option as he does not seem to be getting enough playing time in the first place. Dropping him for a pitcher or a hot hitter seems like the best idea at the moment.

If you want to add Asche later in the season, he will be available on the waiver wire, but remember the Phillies have a star in the making in the minor leagues at third base, so Asche may not regain value if he continues to struggle.

Bronson Arroyo, Arizona Diamondbacks

Arroyo is simply doing nothing beneficial for your fantasy team. For guys who are struggling (Arroyo has an ERA of 9.95), you want to see some signs of life, whether that be a lack of walks or an abundance of strikeouts. Arroyo is doing neither so far this season with just six strikeouts and four walks in 12.2 innings. Find someone else who can help your pitching staff, and if Arroyo rights the ship, then you can always add him later in the season. Do not be afraid of losing him, and no one will want to pick up a player who has allowed more runs than innings pitched.

Adding someone like Tom Koehler would be a good idea for a replacement if you want a quick fix at pitcher.

Billy Butler, Kansas City Royals

While this may come as a shock to some, do not let the name fool you. Butler has eight hits this year, all singles. A .160 batting average with no power is not helping anyone, and Butler is bringing some fantasy teams down already. Someone will pick him up, but soon they will be frustrated as well.

If there is a player on the waiver wire that you want, but cannot figure out who to drop, consider Billy Butler at this time. Maybe George Springer is available, or even Mark Teixeira (who should be back this weekend). Drop Butler and reap the benefits later.
