Fantasy Baseball: Five to Buy Low on Right Now

If you’ve made it this far into the season and you’re still in it enough to consider dealing for another piece, pat yourself on the back and start getting creative. The following five players, all inconsistent performers in 2013 for one reason or another - could also be important pickups in the stretch run, especially if they come at a good price. Buy low on these names, and reap the benefits that may come your way - or revel in the fact that mistakes are far less detrimental when the stakes are low.

Kris Medlen, Starting Pitcher, Atlanta Braves

Perhaps the pressure on Medlen was too great heading into the 2013 season. Coming off of Tommy John surgery, the 27-year-old started last season in the bullpen, but it was the Braves decision to move him to the rotation that was a revelation. Medlen went 9-0 with a 0.97 ERA as a starting pitcher, drawing comparisons to Greg Maddux for both his stature and his ability to throw strikes. This season, the same starter who allowed only a .191 opponents’ batting average a year ago has given up 148 hits in 138.0 innings while walking more, striking out fewer and serving up home runs at a far higher rate. Medlen’s disappointing season nearly earned him a demotion to the bullpen before Tim Hudson’s season-ending injury, but now, as a fixture in the Braves rotation heading into the stretch, dealing for Medlen - owned in roughly 88 percent of leagues - at the right price will net you a serviceable starting pitcher on a winning team. His ground ball tendencies and knack for a big game can't hurt.

Jedd Gyorko, Third Base, San Diego Padres

Rookie Gyorko has played most of the season under the radar in San Diego, as evidenced by the fact that he is only owned in roughly 25 percent of ESPN fantasy leagues. On June 27, Gyorko’s line was .288/.347/.468, putting him well into the range of the National League’s top third basemen, despite being new on the scene. A proven power and average guy in all levels of his minor league career, Gyorko’s luster wore off a bit since the All-Star Break, especially in the aftermath of a groin injury that put him on the disabled list for a month. As the highly-touted prospect regains health and makes adjustments, he can rise up the ranks at the hot corner. The Padres want to see Gyorko develop, and he has as much chance as any to put it all together in the final month and a half of the season.

Alex Cobb, Starting Pitcher, Tampa Bay Rays

Up until the middle of June, young Alex Cobb followed suit with the successes of the Tampa Bay starting rotation, going 6-2 with a 3.01 ERA and only 74 hits in 83.2 innings pitched. Then, on June 15, Cobb was struck on the side of the head with a line drive, which, after the dust had settled, was diagnosed as a concussion. Adamant about returning to the Rays this season, Cobb is scheduled to start Thursday night, which, he stated, will “probably feel like another Opening Day.” Owned in roughly 55 percent of leagues, the 25-year-old is an ideal “buy low” option, as many owners are either apprehensive or have given up on his 2013 season outright. The chance that Cobb could return to being the pitcher he was in the first half makes him an incredibly attractive acquisition for any team in need of a solid starter.

Brett Lawrie, Third Base, Toronto Blue Jays

Lawrie was well on his way to a trip back to Triple-A before a high ankle sprain stopped him in his tracks. Fantasy owners who salivated at the potential in the 23-year-old before the season started became frustrated early, and after struggling to keep his average above the Mendoza line, Lawrie was batting only .209 at the end of May. 41 days later, Lawrie came off the DL, and his comeback has likely gone under the radar. In the month of August, Lawrie has 18 hits - including four doubles, a triple and a home run - in 41 at-bats. Fantasy owners who held fast to Lawrie through his struggles with injury and inconsistency may be willing to cut a deal if they aren’t wooed by his late-summer numbers.

Dan Uggla, Second Base, Atlanta Braves

Surely, this pick can’t be serious, right? Braves fans and fantasy owners have been through the ringer with Uggla who, since arriving in Atlanta, has been as streaky a hitter as they come. This season, the second baseman has carried around the “three possible outcomes” label, as only 72 of his 388 at bats have resulted in hits. Uggla has also racked up 21 home runs, 62 bases on balls and a league-leading 146 strikeouts. This morning, the announcement that he would be hitting the DL to undergo LASIK eye surgery came with scoffs - and ultimately, sighs of relief - from all who questioned why a former MVP candidate was stepping to the plate with a bat seemingly full of holes. His power, especially as a middle infielder, is appealing enough that Uggla is owned in roughly 90 percent of leagues. Still, he makes an interesting “buy low” pick, if you buy into the possibility that it was his eyes all along.
