Evan Gattis versus Brian McCann. Before the season started most people assumed that superstar and seven time All Star McCann would easily have the better season. We are now four weeks into the season and Gattis has proved to be far and beyond the better fantasy option.
Gattis has a better batting average at a mark of .303, while McCann only has a batting average of .244. Gattis has also doubled McCann in homers to this point in the season at six. When it comes to the RBI category Gattis takes that too. His OBP is currently at .325 as opposed to Macs .280 OBP.
One of the main reasons that McCann has struggled so much this season has a lot to do with his struggles against right handed pitching. Over 49 at-bats he has only recorded 10 hits and is batting .204 against said righties. If he could face lefties every single day than he would be one of the best catchers in baseball. He is in complete control against lefties checking in at a batting average of .310. Oh yeah and remember the whole, “McCann’s numbers are going to skyrocket at Yankees stadium”? Yeah turns out that has not been the case. He is batting a putrid .161 at home but does have two of his home runs at Yankee Stadium.
Gattis on the other hand has done very well all around. He’s completely destroying left handed pitching with a batting average of .500. Although the sample size is very small as he has four hits in eight at-bats. The one negative that you can find from Gattis’ game is the high strikeout totals he has accumulated at 13. The strikeouts might be big but he is still batting .281 against right handed hitting.
At this point in the season Gattis has looked like the more reliable and overall better fantasy option. Although we must remember that McCann is a veteran in the game and can heat up at any given moment. If you have McCann on your team you should keep him for the time being. Over the next two months if his numbers don’t improve it might not be a bad idea to check how Gattis has been playing and attempt a trade.
