Fantasy Baseball: Is Stephen Drew Worth Adding?

With the Red Sox signing shortstop Stephen Drew, the question every fantasy baseball player asks is simple. Is he worth adding?

Last season, Drew hit .253 with 13 home runs, 67 runs batted in, and six stolen bases while scoring 57 runs. His FantasyVA was sixth among shortstops last year, so if he can have a similar year for the rest of this season, he could be a good add. But, that was last year. Can he do the same this season?

In his career, Drew has not played a full season since 2010, and he averages 117 games played per year. Drew seems to be injured at some point or another every year, which could hinder expectations for the rest of this season. In those 117 games, he averages 11 home runs and 52 runs batted in while scoring 58.9 runs. As far as production goes, he ranks among the best shortstops when healthy.

Since Drew is a free agent, and there is no risk in adding him, he is worth the claim. As any player off the waiver wire, there is no risk, and very high reward. If Drew can stay healthy and play 100 games for the rest of the season, his career numbers have proven that he can be very productive. At 31 years old, he may be in store for one of his last big seasons before hitting an inevitable decline, so he will definitely want to make the most of it.

Drew will likely hit towards the bottom of the Red Sox order, and is valued as a very good defensive shortstop, but his sneaky production numbers will attract some attention. Considering he had 13 home runs 67 runs batted in last season in just 442 at-bats, he is worth an add in your fantasy league. Middle infield production is hard to come by, as our own FantasyVA tells us, so be sure to take a flier on him. What do you have to lose?
