Fantasy Baseball - NL West Sleeper Picks

It is crunch time for fantasy baseball drafts as Spring Training is now in full swing and the regular season is mere weeks away from opening day. If you are doing your research, which you should be, then the top rated fantasy players in the National League West should be second nature to you. The names like Matt Kemp, Clayton Kershaw, Buster Posey, Matt Cain and Troy Tulowitzki are atop every perspective fantasy GM’s draft day wish list.

Fantasy baseball is an easy draft to partake in, at least for the first five rounds; as by then the top fifty or so players are off the board and each team in the league has one or two representatives. If you are playing in a deeper league of say 12 GM’s and 20 rounds then you had better have an idea of who you are going to be looking at with that 240th pick.

This is eDraft’s fantasy sleeper guide and we are continuing our analysis of potential fantasy sleepers and draft day bargains as we move on to the National League West. From the West division we are focusing on the lesser-known and undervalued players whom you can look at grabbing in those later rounds while your co-general manager’s are struggling to find serviceable fantasy options.

Here are six position players worthy of draft day consideration. Stay tuned to eDraft for fantasy pitchers from throughout the National League and check back for more fantasy sleeper picks as we work our way through each division, next stop the American League. Adam Eaton – Outfield, Arizona Diamondbacks

While manager Kirk Gibson has stopped short of anointing Eaton as the leadoff hitter for the Diamondbacks, the announcement can’t be far off. Eaton has the speed and right approach at the plate for a successful leadoff hitter. He makes good contact, gets on base and will steal 20-plus bags a season. Eaton lacks any real homerun power, but makes up for that in his high OBP and ability to score runs. Eaton would have higher draft-day value if he played for a better team; however, in so much as he plays for the Diamondbacks, his current fantasy value is depressed. Eaton signifies a very nice late-round pickup with huge fantasy potential.

Jedd Gyorko – Second Base, San Diego Padres

Jedd Gyorko is making a serious case for himself this spring to make the San Diego Padres as their starting second baseman. As it stands now the Padres have Logan Forsythe, but his hold on the starting spot is tenuous at best. Worst-case scenario probably sees Gyorko platoon with Forsythe while the best-case scenario has Gyorko getting a full season worth of at-bats. If a platoon situation evolves expect Gyorko to get 10-plus homeruns, 35-plus RBIs with a rip line of .265/.320/.432. A full season would equate to higher production and could see Gyorko score 70 runs and finish with 70 RBIs. A must play in all leagues and all formats; Gyorko has shown that he can play.

Jordan Pacheco – Third Base, First Base, Colorado Rockies

Jordan Pacheco had himself a solid season in 2012, as he lead the league in batting average among all rookies. He played in 132 games and got 475 at-bats last season. This season Pacheco will need to get at least that many at-bats to carry some fantasy value. Playing time is the real issue for Pacheco, fortunately a fantasy upside is that Pacheco is position eligible at third base and first base. With the aging Todd Helton at first base and a productive if not underwhelming Chris Nelson at third base, there should be plenty of at-bats as the season unfolds. Keep your eye on how Pacheco is being used because if he is seeing regular playing time then he will have been a steal on draft day.

Josh Rutledge - Second Base, Colorado Rockies

Josh Rutledge got a taste of the big leagues last season as he played in 73 games and got 277 at-bats in place of the injured Troy Tulowitzki. During that time he played quite well, he was better in July and August than he was in September and October; however, still finished the season with an impressive .274 AVG. Rutledge should be fantasy eligible at both shortstop and second base which could boost his draft day value. If the season were to open today, Rutledge would be the Rockies' starting second baseman. In all likelihood, Rutledge will be the starter and will get his days off to keep him fresh into the later months of the season. At this point, I think Rutledge projects as a 15 HR / 15 SB player who is capable of scoring and driving in 65-plus runs. Great value for a second baseman as I think his season-end fantasy numbers will surpass those of the highly touted Jedd Gyorko.

Honorable Mention

James Darnell – Outfield, San Diego Padres

A shoulder injury severely limited Darnell’s time in the majors last season. He remains a solid prospect for the San Diego Padres; however, needs to remain healthy and needs a position to play. As it stand now, he is currently blocked by Chase Headley and prospect Jedd Gyorko at third base. The best option for Darnell is the outfield and that isn’t going to happen for him just yet. A deep league sleeper pick as this kid has shown he can flat out hit. A true draft and stash kind of player as the dividends on Darnell might just be a year away.

Dee Gordon – Shortstop, Los Angeles Dodgers

With the addition of Hanley Ramirez the Los Angeles Dodgers appear ready to send Dee Gordon back to Triple-A where he figures to get the playing time he needs. Gordon did play half the year with the Dodgers last season and he showed that although young, he is ready for a full-time gig in the majors. That being said, the Dodgers may look at trading their young prospect in hopes of capitalizing on his solid audition during last season.
