Fantasy Baseball Player Profile: Jimmy Rollins

Fantasy Baseball Player Profile: Jimmy Rollins

Jimmy Rollins may not hit for power or steal bases like he used to, but he still may turn into a very valuable late-round pickup if your team needs another shortstop.

The shortstop position is probably the weakest of all positions in this year's fantasy pool, and finding a diamond in the rough will be key for all participants when drafting one. Rollins may be a choice that could pay dividends, as he still has a good pedigree despite getting up there in age.

Rollins hit only six home runs last year, easily the lowest of any season in his career; however, he still managed to smack  23 homers in 2012. Also, he only drove in 39 runs last year: another career low.

His age may lead some to believe that he is in the middle of  steady decline, but he still showed some athleticism by swiping 22 bases last year.

One issue, however, with Rollins that has stuck out like a sore thumb over the last few seasons is that he has had issues hitting for average. The last time he hit .270 or over was 2007, and he only hit a .252 clip last year.

Also, a weak Philadelphia Phillies team and questions about Chase Utley and Ryan Howard could lead to Rollins not scoring a bunch of runs. He only crossed home plate 65 times last year, and it could happen even less this year if Utley and Howard do not improve.

Nevertheless, he may be a low-risk, high-reward type player if you draft him in the late rounds of a deep league. He doesn't need to be great, but if he can keep up fairly solid numbers as he has shown that he is capable of, he could be a solid addition as a bench player.

Projected Stats: .254 average, 8 HR, 44 RBI, 19 SB, 71 R
