With the news a few days ago about Prince Fielder needing surgery on his neck and missing the rest of the season, it presents a crossroads for fantasy baseball players who had Fielder as their first baseman.
Now that he is done for the year, what options do you have?
If you want to stay with the first baseman in the same batting lineup, Mitch Moreland will assume everyday duties. But, Moreland is hardly a first base stud in fantasy baseball. So what do you do? In deep leagues, chances are there is nothing to do but try to find a lucky gem on the waiver wire.
Jesus Aguilar was called up a week ago, but he does not seem ready for MLB at-bats every day yet. Juan Francisco was the hot add a week ago, but he is owned in almost every fantasy league. So, the answer to this question, even though it seems like a reach, lies on the waiver wire in 85 percent of leagues.
Kendrys Morales is a free agent, but with the MLB draff looming in the next two weeks, he is expected to sign with a team and play right away. Could this team be Texas? The Rangers would have to take a look, but teams like the Yankees need another bat, and someone to play first base.
Either way, Morales should get a look in your fantasy league assuming he signs to play within the next few weeks. Last year, Morales hit .277 with 23 home runs and 80 runs batted in. Is that worth the add? In fantasy baseball, there is almost no risk to adding a player on the waiver wire, and with a sudden scarcity at first base, Morales is worth adding if you need to replace Fielder. If by some chance Morales does not sign, drop him and pick up someone else. It's a low-risk, high-reward transaction for your fantasy baseball team.
