Fantasy Baseball: Sell High on Brandon Moss

The Oakland Athletics may be the best team in baseball right now, thanks to strength from everywhere on the roster. The team's rotation has been getting the job done even with ace Jarrod Parker sidelined all season after Tommy John surgery, the bullpen is one of the best in baseball and the offense has been scoring all sorts of runs to go along with the pitching.

One of the top hitters in Oakland's lineup is first baseman/outfielder Brandon Moss. He is hitting .301 this year with nine home runs and 39 runs batted in; some of the best all-around numbers in the majors. Moss and Athletics third baseman Josh Donaldson have spearheaded an offense that has an astonishing plus-95 run differential already in mid-May.

The difference between Donaldson and Moss, however, is that Donaldson has put up consistent numbers across the board before. Moss has always had good power numbers, but he has not been known to hit for average very well.

Obviously, this year's .301 mark is uncharacteristic. Moss's career average is .257, and he is still trying to prove that he can hold a starting spot at age 30: he has only played in two semi-full seasons before.

In 2009, Moss played in 133 games as a Pittsburgh Pirate and hit .236. Surprisingly, he hit only seven home runs that season, playing in a much more hitter-friendly ballpark than O.co Coliseum. Where did the power come from?

His other semi-full season was last year with Oakland. Moss homered thirty times in 145 games while hitting a .256 clip.

The chance of Moss stabilizing his high batting average over the course of the season is very slim given his past and the fact that he has likely reached his prime given his age.

Moss will continue to hit for power and drive in a good amount of runs, there is no doubt about that. However, if you are not in need of home runs or RBI in your fantasy league, trading him to one of your opponents while he is hot could certainly work out in your favor.
