Fantasy Baseball: Sell High on George Springer

Houston Astros top prospect George Springer has exploded onto the scene this season, as he has mashed eighteen homers already in just over two months since his big league debut.

Springer has been a huge reason why the Astros are not far-and-behind the worsts team in baseball right now and has been getting a good amount of media attention because of his reputation and performance thus far. The young outfielder was supposed to be an effective power hitter, but nobody expected him to make this much of an impact so early.

In addition to the eighteen "Springer Dingers", he has driven in 48 runs and crossed home plate 43 times himself, also getting an occasional stolen base.

Unfortunately, it is not all sunshine and daisies in Springer's rookie season...his batting average is only a measly .235.

Not everything can be perfect for a young rookie, even one as heralded as Springer, but the low average shows that he has had trouble adjusting to major league pitching in terms of consistently getting on base.

Another negative sign is that Springer has not been able to raise that average; in fact, it seems to keep dropping lower and lower. In the past fifteen days, he is hitting .211. The past seven days? .148.

Expect the rest of Springer's rookie year to be much the same: decent power, but a low average.

You will want him on your fantasy team - but in 2015 or 2016, not this year. Luckily for you, if you are stuck with him, trading him should not be much of a problem.

Many people will be biting at the bit for a youngster like Springer solely because of what baseball experts think he is capable of doing. However, players hardly ever come close to their full potential in their rookie season, so some people tend to overvalue rookie standouts from a fantasy baseball standpoint.

Unless you are starving for home runs, consider trading Springer. You will definitely get quite the return.
