Fantasy Baseball: Shortstops To Start This Weekend

The first weekend of fantasy baseball is coming up, and we at eDraft are here to help you win your league. One of the worst positions this season for fantasy baseball is shortstop, as there are not too many out there who can hit for both average and power. Here are three shortstops that should help you out tremendously this weekend if you are going back-and-forth on who to start.

Ian Desmond - Washington Nationals

Desmond is one of the most well-rounded shortstops in baseball offensively, and he could be set up to have a very good weekend. His Nationals will face David Hale on Friday, Julio Teheran on Saturday and Alex Wood on Sunday in a three-game series with the Atlanta Braves.

Desmond has never batted against Hale, but the youngster could be rattled by a tough Washington lineup and Desmond could put up some good numbers. He is also a .357 lifetime hitter against Teheran, which seems like a solid matchup on Saturday.

Be wary, however, of starting Desmond on Sunday. He is yet to get a hit in five career at-bats against Wood. Maybe he is due.

J.J. Hardy - Baltimore Orioles

Hardy is facing a great Detroit Tigers rotation this weekend, but his numbers in the past against such strong arms indicate that he may have found a way to crack Detroit's pitching.

He is a career .400 batter in fifteen at-bats against Rick Porcello, who he will face Friday. Hardy has only faced Saturday's starter Drew Smyly once in his career, but he is one of the few hitters in baseball that has Justin Verlander's number, who he will face on Sunday.

Hardy is a career .286 hitter against Verlander, but he has clubbed three home runs off of the Tigers ace.

Yunel Escobar - Tampa Bay Rays

Escobar is not normally one of the top shortstops in the game, but he could have himself a very good weekend against the Rangers. He has hit well against Friday's starter Joe Saunders, but has not faced the young Nick Martinez or Tanner Scheppers, who he will see on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
