Fantasy Baseball: Top Five Third Basemen of the First Half

1. Josh Donaldson, Toronto Blue Jays

2016 Statistics: .304 average, 23 homers, 63 RBI, 80 runs and 48 extra-base hits (406.0 fantasy points)

Donaldson has been the most dominating hitter in all of baseball since joining the Toronto Blue Jays last season. Over the course of the past year and a half (247 games) the reigning AL MVP is hitting at a .300 clip with 64 homers, 186 RBI, 202 runs scored, 286 hits and a whopping 132 extra-base hits. Those are just some absurd numbers.

From a fantasy perspective, he's been elite-level all season. Here's a guy that's AVERAGING 4.6 fantasy points per outing while tallying eight-plus fantasy points 20 times in the first half. That's absolutely absurd.

2. Kris Bryant, Chicago Cubs

2016 Statistics: .286 average, 25 homers, 65 RBI, 73 runs and 46 extra-base hits (365.8 fantasy points)

It's hard not to be impressed by the 2015 NL Rookie of the Year. Dude is on pace for 45-plus homers, 115-plus RBI and 85-plus extra-base hits. Those are absurd numbers when it comes to the actual sport. Now take into account fantasy baseball, and that's magnified even further.

Consider this. Bryant is hitting .280 with a .327 BAbip against righties this seasons. For comparison's sake, he's posting a .298/.292 split against lefties. Adding to a level of consistency we've rarely seen recently, Bryant is actually hitting 89 points higher on the road than he is at home. This is a suggestiong that splits/competition shouldn't play a role in when deciding to buy into Bryant in DFS contests moving forward.

3. Manny Machado, Baltimore Orioles

2016 Statistics: .318 average, 19 homers, 53 RBI, 62 runs and 48 extra-base hits (325.0 fantasy points)

Despite earning two All-Star appearances in his first three full seasons with the Orioles, Machado is in the midst of a career season. He's on pace to top his career hights in hits, runs scored, doubles, RBI, batting average, on-base percentage, BABip and OPS. That's pretty absurd in and of itself.

Now considering this. Machado hit 35 homers while scoring 102 runs last season. It's not like he was some sort of an average player before this year. Taking his game to that whole new level has also expanded his appeal in the fake baseball world. Among all qualified hitters, Machado ranks 19th in fantasy points. Not too shabby.

4. Nolan Arenado, Colorado Rockies

2016 Statistics: .287 average, 23 homers, 70 RBI, 60 runs and 49 extra-base hits (353.3 fantasy points)

Despite leading all MLB third basemen in homers and extra-base hits, we had to drop Arenado down a notch in our rankings. A product of Coors Field, the youngster is hitting 40 points higher at home than he is on the road. This isn't taking anything away from his performance (42 homers, 130 RBI a season ago).

Instead, when looking at it through a fantasy lens, we have to take this into account. While still a viable play on the road, the 24-year-old is nowhere near the must-buy option as he is at home. That's the harsh reality of the situation. Still, dude is on pace for 42 homers and 130 RBI. That's pretty legit right there.

5. Matt Carpenter, St. Louis Cardinals

2016 Statistics: .298 average, 14 homers, 53 RBI, 56 runs and 44 extra-base hits (316.3 fantasy points)

Despite finding himself on the DL, Carpenter had a splendid first half of the season. Hitting nearly .300 with a NL-best .420 on-base percentage, a .988 OPS and .335 BABip, he's more than proven himself to be among the game's most unheralded hitters.

Taking that to the fake baseball world, Carpenter has been consistently good, going for six-plus fantasy points in over 32 percent of his games thus far in 2016. This makes him a must buy in DFS contests.
