Fantasy Baseball: Top-Five Week Five Drops

The end of April is rapidly coming to a close, and things are looking to be way more interesting than many could have imagined. By now you’re getting a fair understanding of how your lineup is going to look for the rest of the season. By now you should also be realizing that a few of the guys you’ve held onto up until this point are probably not going to get back to the same form they had throughout 2012, which prompted you to pick them up in the first place. It’s ok, it really is. You’re not out of the race yet, but it might be a good idea to let these five players go before they continue to slow your fortune.

Ike Davis New York Mets 1B

It’s kind of mystery as to why so many people flock to New York Mets first baseman Ike Davis. While it’s obvious that he hits a lot of home runs, he doesn’t exactly do it at a favorable rate. Davis only has four home runs on the season, something that would normally be praised if he wasn’t batting .169. It should also be noted that he’s only knocked in eight runs and scored 11 times himself. If you do the math you’ll realize that half of his RBIs include himself. Dump him now and find someone else who will produce for you all around.

Melky Cabrera Toronto Blue Jays OF

Quite a few critics felt that Melky Cabrera was going to be a huge offensive factor for the Toronto Blue Jays, even if it meant him coming off a 50-game suspension for testing positive for PEDs. That moment of greatness is still waiting to be seen. Cabrera is batting a modest .250 on the season; however, he has yet to knock one over the wall without it bouncing in the field of play first. His six RBIs and eight runs scored are not exactly tickling the Blue Jays Faithfull’s fancy either. Now might be a great time to check out Nate McLouth (wink wink).

Brett Anderson Oakland Athletics SP

Brett Anderson had a great 2012 season after coming off the DL from Tommy John surgery. Great things were expected for the 2013 season; however, great things are not exactly being displayed. In five starts this season, Anderson is sitting at a 1-4 record with 24 strikeouts and a 7.23 ERA. Yeesh! Anderson is going to miss a start or two due to an ankle-related issue which has been cited as the root cause for his poor numbers; even more of a reason to find a fresh body for your rotation.

Miguel Montero Arizona Diamondbacks C

It’s a bit of a mystery as to why Arizona Diamondbacks' catcher Miguel Montero is underperforming this season, especially with as protected in the batting order as he appears to be. Last season he batted .286 with 15 home runs and 88 RBIs. This season he’s batting .207 with one home run and 10 RBIs thus far. Depending on how big your league is, there are definitely more valuable and consistent catchers available to round your team out.

Dan Uggla Atlanta Braves 2B

Is there really need for an explanation? Dan Uggla is currently batting .160 which surpasses his career-low for April of .194 set back in 2011. Two of the biggest differences between that year and this year is that he had more home runs and more RBIs in 2011 at the end of the first month. Uggla, like Davis above, is great for hitting home runs, but not much use for anything else. It would behoove you to find someone who can play the keystone with more constancy as a hitter.
