How many times have you seen Jimmy Rollins make a backhand play in the hole and throw the base runner out by a half step. How many times have you seen Brandon Phillips make a diving play at second base to save two runs from scoring? That is what DIPS can show us. What does a pitcher's ERA look like without great plays, or just based on average major league fielding.
