Fantasy Baseball: Who Is This Year's Matt Harvey?

Fantasy Baseball: Who Is This Year's Matt Harvey?

No, the question is not which young pitcher will need Tommy John surgery in his rookie season. That would just be cruel.

The question is: which young pitcher can put up Cy Young-caliber numbers and be drafted in a late round of your draft? It seems impossible, but it happened last year and it can definitely happen again. Finding this needle in a haystack could provide a huge boost to your fantasy baseball team.

So which young pitcher has the potential to break out of his shell this season and become one of baseball's elite?

One name stands out in particular. In fact, on the big stage last October, this young 24-year-old battled one of baseball's elite pitchers and lineups twice in one week, pitching extremely well against some of the best hitters in the game and matching one of the best pitchers in the game nearly pitch-for-pitch despite playing in only twelve regular season games.

If you want to get an arm that you can grab in late rounds who has shown his ability to perform against the best, take a look at Sonny Gray of the Oakland Athletics.

A small sample size could deter some of your opponents from selecting Gray, but in his twelve regular season games last year (ten starts), he posted a 2.67 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP and struck out 67 while walking only 20 in 64 innings of work.

There has been a lot of hype surrounding Gray in the Bay Area, but he is not as well-known to the rest of the baseball world. Other than Detroit, that is.

Gray faced Detroit in Game Two in Oakland's American League Division Series against the Tigers with his team trailing 1-0 in the best-of-five series. Losing a second game at home would have been devastating to the Athletics.

The task would not be easy for the rookie, as he was going up against one of the best pitchers in baseball in Justin Verlander, and would be facing names like Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez.

Gray allowed only four hits over eight scoreless innings and struck out nine Tigers. The top five hitters in the order (arguably the best top five in any MLB lineup) went a combined 1-for-17 against Gray, with the only hit being a Cabrera single.

Gray kept the Tigers off of the scoreboard, but Verlander was dealing on the other end as well, keeping Oakland off of the scoreboard as well. However, the Athletics were able to win the game by a score of 1-0 on a single by Stephen Vogt in the bottom of the ninth. Gray's performance allowed Oakland to overcome a dismal offensive performance and escape the game with the series deadlocked at one.

But was Gray's performance a fluke? Heading back to Oakland for a winner-take-all Game Five, Detroit fans were confident that their team would be able to figure Gray out, and crack the rookie in the pressure of an elimination game.

The Athletics were not able to pull off the win due to Verlander's dominance, but Gray again remained stellar, giving up three runs on six hits in five innings of work. Not shocking numbers, but still very good for a rookie pitcher in a Game Five against one of the best lineups in baseball.

Maybe Gray will have trouble keeping his ERA under 3.00 this season, but he has shown his ability to perform on a big stage and has seemingly proven that he is not a fluke. With Bartolo Colon wearing Mets blue and orange this year, Gray will be relied upon big-time in Oakland to bring the Bay Area it's third consecutive American League West Division Championship.

But pressure, obviously, is not exactly something that Sonny Gray fears.
