In the midst of one of the most-historic power runs in recent MLB history, Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton has cleared waivers and is available to be traded prior to the end of August's waiver trade deadline.
On the surface, the idea of Miami trading Stanton makes absolutely no sense. Here's a dude that's on pace to hit 60 homers and drive in 130 runs. He's the face of a franchise that has not had this type of star power in years.
The issue here for Miami is that Stanton is playing under an absurd 13-year, $325 million contract. He has 11 more seasons under this deal. And with a new ownership group in place here soon, led by Derek Jeter, the organization might want to move on from Stanton's handcuff of a contract.
At least four teams have reportedly expressed interest in the MVP candidate. And previous reports suggested that the San Francisco Giants, desperately in need of power from the outfield, might make a run for him during the winter.
It will be interesting to see if Stanton is moved prior to the end off August. And while that seems highly unlikely, it would not be a shock to see him traded following the season.
Stanton is hitting .290 with a .303 BABip on the road this season. He's also hit more homers and driven in more runs away from Marlins Park. That's important to note when it comes to his potential long-term fantasy viability should Stanton himself be moved.
