Fantasy Impact: Minnesota Twins SP Jose Berrios Not Expected to Make Rotation

The opportunity to represent one's country in the World Baseball Classic, especially for Latin American players, is an honor. Minnesota Twins pitcher Jose Berrios seized on the opportunity to pitch for Puerto Rico in the WBC and helped his team make it to the championship. Unfortunately they finished the runner-up once again and Berrios returns to some disappointing news.

In part due to not being in camp and competing with the other pitchers, Berrios is expected to not make the Twins rotation to start the season and could be headed back to the minor leagues.

Berrios, one of the top prospects in baseball in recent years, made his major-league debut last season. Across 58 1/3 innings, Berrios surrendered 74 hits, 52 earned runs and held just a 49/35 K/BB ratio. His 8.02 ERA and 5.40 BB/9 showed an overmatched pitcher, a 22-year-old that wasn't ready for major-league hitters.

A return to the minors is probably a good move for Berrios. In Triple-A, he can continue to work on his command and secondary pitches, refining them so he can avoid the massive issues he dealt with in 2016. The fantasy sparkle in dynasty leagues has worn off some, but Berrios could become a nice post-hype, buy-low candidate in dynasty leagues. Though owners should avoid him in non-keeper leagues and small keeper leagues.

With Berrios out of the picture, the fifth starter gig will likely be given to Adalberto Mejia. Acquired from the San Francisco Giants in the Eduardo Nunez trade, Across 14 1/3 innings pitched, Mejia's limited opponents to just 12 hits, three earned runs and holds a 14/4 K/BB ratio. He's not a high-ceiling fantasy prospect by any means, but he could make for a solid No.5 starter long-term.
