Fantasy Impact of Clayton Kershaw Injury News

Now that we know three-time NL Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw will be out for an undetermined amount of time, the Los Angeles Dodgers find themselves in an unenviable position.

Los Angeles boasts a 14-2 record in Kershaw's 16 starts this season. Meanwhile, it's just 40-40 in games that the team's ace hasn't taken to the hill. Overall, Dodgers' starters boast a 4.80 ERA, even with Kershaw's ridiculous 1.79 mark included.

Where do the Dodgers go from here? How will Kershaw's injury play out from a fantasy perspective? These two questions are linked more than you might originally believe.

Starter Alex Wood is currently on the 60-day disabled list and isn't slated to return until late this month, at the earliest. Meanwhile, the often-injured Brett Anderson remains on the shelf for the team.

This has led to the likes of Ross Stripling, Julio Urias, Mike Bolsinger, Bud Norris and Brandon McCarthy combining to start 28 games. Combined, they've posted an 8-9 record with a 4.70 ERA on the season.

Needless to say, the expectation here has to be that the Dogers will look outside of the organization for starting pitching help. In fact, there's a chance the team might target top-end options on the trade market.

As of right now, Kenta Maeda seems to be the best internal option from a fantasy perspective. He's posted an 8-7 record with a 3.25 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP on the year. New acquisition Bud Norris, starting Wednesday, has also performed well. He's put up a 2-0 record with a 3.94 ERA and over 10 strikeouts per nine innings in three starts with the team.

Meanwhile, the aforementioned Urias will get the start Thursday against the Washington Nationals. As we mentioned before, he's not going to be anywhere near a fantasy option until he can prove he has the ability to go late into games.

What does this all mean?

Unless you're looking to go cheap in DFS games, avoid the Dodgers rotation at all possibility cost. As it relates to standard re-draft leagues, there are likely better options on the waiver wire than the likes of Bolsinger, McCarthy and Urias.
