The Washington Nationals traded second baseman Danny Espinosa to the Los Angeles Angels for two pitching prospects. The deal was announced late Saturday evening and gives the Angels a new starting second baseman.
Espinosa his 24 homers and drove in 72 runs. However, he barely finished above the Mendoza line with a .209 average while striking out 174 times. Outside of an injury-plagued 2013 campaign, one could say Espinosa's 2016 performance was the worst of his career.
A change of scenery is definitely needed here.
From a fantasy standpoint, the veteran should benefit from playing in an American League West that's short on top-level pitching talent. Angel Stadium is also considered much more hitter friendly than his old stomping grounds.
Heading to the Nats in the deal are two minor league pitchers.
25-year-old Austin Adams is a relief pitcher that posted a decent 2016 season in Double-A, putting up a 3.05 ERA with over 13 K's per nine.
Meanwhile, fellow 25-year-old pitcher Kyle McGowin posted a 6-12 record with an inflated 6.11 ERA for Triple-A Salt Lake City in the hitter friendly PCL. He might be given a shot to catch on as Washington's No. 5 starter or long reliever during the spring.
