Fantasy Impact of Ian Desmond Signing with the Rockies

The Colorado Rockies bolstered their lineup on Wednesday, signing All-Star Ian Desmond to a five-year, $70 million contract.

Desmond, 31, is coming off a 2016 campaign that saw him hit .285 with a .335 on-base percentage to go with 22 homers and 86 RBI for the Texas Rangers, his only season with that club.

Expected to split time between first base and the outfield this upcoming season, Desmond should definitely benefit from playing half his games at the hitter-friendly Coors Field.

As a member of the Washington Nationals for parts of seven seasons earlier in his career, the veteran posted a .379 average with three homers and 18 RBI in just 23 games in Colorado. He also boasts a career .440 BABip at Coors Field. Talk about taking advantage of the high-altitude situation in Denver.

More to the point, Desmond has posted career average of .300-plus against both the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants in his career.

It would not be surprising to see Desmond act as one of the top overall fantasy players in the game this upcoming season. A total of 35-plus homers and 110-plus RBI wouldn't seem too unrealistic here.
