The Seattle Mariners and Atlanta Braves agreed on what could eventually be a major trade on Wednesday. It's a deal that sent young outfielder Mallex Smith and right-handed pitching prospect Shae Simmons to Seattle in exchange for pitching prospects Luiz Gohara and Thomas Burrows.
Smith is the best-known of the four players moved in this trade. The 23-year-old outfielder hit .238 with three homers, 22 RBI, 16 stolen bases and a .316 on-base percentage as a rookie for the Braves last season. If he remains in Seattle, Smith will likely be given an opportunity to earn a starting outfield spot.
For the Braves, they were able to acquire two electric young arms for one of the many outfielders that had on their roster prior to this trade.
Gohara, 20, pitched to a 7-2 record with a 1.81 ERA, 1.15 ERA and 10.5 K's per nine innings between two Single-A levels last season. He projects as a top of the rotation arm moving forward.
Meanwhile, Burrows was a fourth-round pick of the Mariners in last year's draft. He put up a 2.55 ERA with 13.5 strikeouts per nine innings in Single-A ball last season.
