The Philadelphia Phillies have signed veteran outfielder Michael Saunders to a one-year, $8 million contract. It's a move the Phillies needed to make in order to fill a power vacuum in the outfield.
Saunders, 30, posted a .253 average while hitting 24 homers and driving 57 runs last season. He also posted a .338 on-base percentage and .815 OPS en route to earning his first All-Star appearance.
Saunders figures to take over as the Phillies' everyday left fielder. Though, Saunders, a left-handed hitter, has proven to be more effective against those who tow the left side off the rubber throughout his career.
Last year saw him hit .275 with a .338 BABip against left-handed pitchers. That's an oddity for lefties in the baseball world and will draw some confusion as it relates to his fantasy relevance moving forward.
