On Monday night, the Tampa Bay Rays signed veteran outfielder Colby Rasmus to a one-year, $5 million deal that could be worth up to $7 million with incentives.
It's an astonishing small contract for a player in Rasmus that many had potentially pegged for a huge payday when he was nailing 20-plus homers on a consistent basis earlier in his career.
The 30-year-old Rasmus struggled big time with the Houston Astros last season, hitting .206 with 15 homers, 54 RBI and an incredibly low .286 on-base percentage. This broke a string of Rasmus hitting 20-plus homers in three of his past four seasons.
Likely to be battling for a starting job in Tampa, Rasmus boasts a career .197 average in 127 at-bats at Tropicana Field.
