Fantasy Impact of Red Sox Acquiring Chris Sale

The Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox pulled off the first big blockbuster of the MLB offseason Tuesday morning with Chicago sending ace starter Chris Sale to Boston for four minor leaguers.

Sale had long been on the trade block, but the Red Sox seemed to come out of nowhere. As of Monday night, it looked like the Washington Nationals were the favorites to land Sale.

That's obviously no longer the case.

By adding Sale, Boston now has a strong trio at the top of its rotation with Cy Young winner Rick Porcello and David Price filling out the other two spots. That's two Cy Young winners in the same rotation with a third, Sale, acting as a top-end candidate over the past several seasons.

What exactly does this blockbuster mean from a fantasy perspective? Well, first things first. Sale pretty much handcuffs the division-rival New York Yankees. In 10 career games (seven starts) against the Bronx Bombers, Sale has posted a 1.17 ERA and 0.82 WHIP while accumulating over 10 strikeouts per nine innings. That's some dominating stuff right there. He's also had success against Toronto, posting a career 4-2 record with a 2.25 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in eight games (five starts).

As it relates to Sale's new digs of Fenway Park, there's not a huge sample size. He's only made six appearances (three starts) in Boston, posting a 3.63 ERA and 1.11 WHIP.

Despite seeing his overall ERA increase to above 3.30 in each of the past two seasons, Sale is still a top end starter in t his league. He went 17-10 with 233 strikeouts in 226.1 innings last season. This came on the heels of Sale leading the AL in strikeouts with 274 back in 2015.

The White Sox received four minor leaguers back in the deal, including Cuban third baseman Yon Moncada, who entered the 2016 MLB as one of the top-three overall prospects in the game.

At 21 years old and having never played above Double-A ball, Moncada got a taste of the Majors with Boston last season. He struck out 12 times in 19 at-bats. Needless to say, the White Sox will likely take it a bit slower with their new prized prospect.

Former first-round pick Michael Kopech, a dominating young starting pitcher who struck out 86 batters in 56.1 innings in the minors last season, was also sent to Chicago in the deal. At 20 years old and only seeing experience in Single-A ball last season, he's ways off from the Majors.
