The Royals have brought in veteran pitcher Travis Wood on a reported two-year deal. He's expected to compete with Bran Flynn, Jason Vargas and Chris Young for a spot in the rotation.
Wood, 30, became a full-time reliever for the first time in his career with the defending champion Chicago Cubs last season. He pitched to a 2.95 ERA with a 1.13 WHIP and nearly seven Ks per nine in 77 appearances.
If Wood had decided to remain solely a reliever, he likely would have received more play on the free-agent market prior to February, but it's rather clear he was holding out for an opportunity to start.
The veteran's best performance as a starter came with the Cubs back in 2013 when he posted a 3.11/1.15 split en route to earning a trip to the All-Star Game.
There's nothing really to see here from a fantasy perspective should Wood earn a starting gig. It's his presence potentially in the back-end of the bullpen that could help the likes of Danny Duffy, Ian Kennedy and Jason Hammel become more fantasy relevant at the top of Kansas City's rotation.
