Fantasy Slant: White Sox acquire James Shields from Padres

In an attempt to stay with the Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Indians in the American League Central, the suddenly free-falling Chicago White Sox have acquired starter James Shields from the San Diego Padres for two minor league prospects.

Shields, 34, was having a down season for the Padres at the time of the trade. He boasts a 2-7 record with a 4.28 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP in 11 starts.

Away from the pitcher-friendly PETCO Park, Shields struggled big time, posting a 5.16 ERA in five starts.

The former All-Star is two years removed from being a top of the rotation guy. Back in 2013 for the Royals, he posted a 14-8 record and a 3.21 ERA in helping that team to the first of two consecutive American League titles. Now going up against his former squad, Shields will take the No. 3 spot in Chicago's rotation behind Chris Sale and Jose Quintana

From a fantasy perspective, this should push Shields down a tad in the rankings. Going from pitching at PETCO to U.S. Cellular Field is a major shift. Though, it must be noted that Shields has posted a 4-1 record with a 3.00 ERA and a solid 1.33 WHIP in 11 career starts at his new home.

Fernando Tatis Jr. heads the two names going to San Diego in this deal. The 17 year old was signed as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic last July. The infielder is considered one of the top international prospects in the game.

Also heading to San Diego is former second-round pick Erik Johnson, who has tallied a 7-6 record with a 4.50 ERA in 18 career Major League starts through four seasons. The 26 year old posted a 11-8 record with a 2.71 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP with Chicago's Triple-A team last season. He figures to take Shields spot in the Padres' rotation, and is someone to keep an eye on in DFS play.
