Currently in position to earn a playoff spot as the second wild card team in the American League, the Kansas City Royals made a rather big move on Sunday. The team acquired veteran outfielder Melky Cabrera from the division-rival Chicago White Sox for two pitching prospects.
The soon-to-be 33-year-old Cabrera has put up a solid 2017 season. He's hitting .295 with 13 homers, 56 RBI and a .771 OPS.
The switch-hitter has been especially effective against lefties, posting a .296/.827 split. Considering the Royals as a team are batting just .250 against pitchers that toe that side of the rubber, the addition of Cabrera is pretty big.
Cabrera has made 92 of his 97 starts this season in left field. He figures to split time between there and DH with the Royals moving forward.
Heading to Chicago in the deal are minor league pitchers A.J. Puckett and Andre Davis. Puckett, a second-round pick of the Royals in 2016, is the headliner here. He's pitching to a 9-7 record with a 3.90 ERA in high Single-A ball. MLB.com had him as the Royals' 13th-best prospect heading into the season.
