Fantasy Spin: Dodgers 3B Justin Turner Breaks Wrist

As the spring training calendar ticks down and we get closer to the start of the season, the one thing everyone hopes for in the final games if for every player to come out of it all healthy. Unfortunately, the Los Angeles Dodgers suffered a significant blow on Monday when third baseman Justin Turner took a pitch off the wrist and his first at bat and suffered a broken wrist.

While an exact timetable is unknown for Turner's return, the 33-year-old isn't expected back until May at the earliest point. Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman suffered a broken wrist last season and missed six weeks, but previous timetables have even kept players out for eight weeks after a broken wrist.

It serves as a major blow for fantasy owners and the Dodgers. Turner, one of the best third basemen in the National League, was expected to deliver another excellent season in 2018. Projected for 20-plus home runs,160-plus runs produced and a high triple-slash line, a potential two month absence will be brutal for fantasy owners who already drafted Turner.

In his absence, Los Angeles is expected to turn to Logan Forsythe to handle a majority of the starts at third base. Even with regular at bats, it will be tough to trust Forsythe in fantasy this season. After a 20-homer, .264/.333/.444 slash with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2016, Forsythe would hit just six home runs and post a .224 batting average last season with the Dodgers. With the potential for only single-digit home run and stolen bases totals, paired with a low batting average, Forsythe is one to avoid in fantasy.

Turner's absence also opens the door for Austin Barnes to see more playing time. Barnes played second base frequently last season and continued to impress with the bat, making him a target for fantasy owners. He could now see more time at second base to start the year to help balance his role as a platoon catcher with Yasmani Grandal.

When a timetable for Turner's return becomes available, eDraft Sports will update you.
